Sustainable peace in Rwanda requires raising the next generation of peace builders, and this is the mission of the Ihumure Peace Academy. With a special, trauma sensitive, values based, peace building curriculum, our school is a place for healing community as well as learning and development. While we began as a three-classroom nursery school, our goal is to grow into an elementary school that becomes a key resource for the community as well as a model for the country.
Even the youngest of children have a head start at learning the basics while learning the most important lessons about friendship, family, and community. Our children develop their resilience, creativity and competence through the arts. Basic skills and values are taught with stories, songs, dancing, drawing, painting, and even sculpture. At our school learning is fun, brings families together, and creates life long friendships, all while centering Rwanda’s cultural values. Our school is also a community for families, in which parents are organized in their own club and contribute to the school’s direction and decision-making in collaboration with the school administration and faculty.

Our school is nestled in the beautiful campus of the Ihumure Peace Center. The immediate goal is to complete the creation of a lower primary school within the campus walls. There is ample space, after that, to house the elementary school and nursery school within the Peace Center campus. Let’s build sustainable peace, one child at a time.
